Centre Programme
Our centre's ‘Programme Planning’ is based on a
“Negotiated Curriculum”, which is “a curriculum that is
planned and organized in response to the knowledge,
interests, skills and dispositions of the children and
that adapts readily to their interests” (DOPS).
This enables teachers to seize the teachable moments and
to respond to them then and there.
The steps we use are:
Notice
– What do we notice see and hear the children doing?
Recognize
– What learning do I recognize taking place?
Respond
– How did I respond and what are further possibilities?
The documentation is displayed on the wall, and then
they are turned into learning stories. Our learning
story format is narrative in form and focuses on the
child’s dispositions and records educator’s plans for
extending the child. The Learning stories along with
relevant paintings and photo’s are placed into the
child’s portfolios. Copies of the learning stories are
also made into books and placed in the library for the
children to revisit.
Behavior Management
Our child behavior management policy is based on the
importance of respect and dignity for the child,
acknowledge and accepting children’s feelings and
encouraging there feelings to be expressed. Steps that
we take towards establishing good behavior management
include:
-
Setting and maintaining appropriate limits of
behavior.
-
Verbal redirection.
-
Explaining the appropriate uses of materials and
equipment.
-
Reinforcing positive behavior with praise.
-
Explaining why a behavior is inappropriate or
unacceptable and providing options.
-
Offering children choices and encouraging decision
making.
-
Setting realistic expectations which are age and
stage appropriate.
-
All staff model non-violent behavior for the
children’s interactions with each other.
Students
Our centre supports students under going Early Childhood
Studies, a component of their study is spending three or
more weeks at another centre therefore from time to time
you may sees new faces at the centre. The students would
have been screened by their tertiary provider and at no
times will they be left to supervise the children
unattended. The students will adhere to our philosophy
and interact with the children giving help and attention
when needed. The students are required to complete a
certain amount of tasks and assignments while on
practicum and will need to take photo’s and observations
while at the centre, if you do not want your child to be
involved or require more information please let it be
known to the supervisor.
Safety
Centre policies on safety precautions are continually
reinforced by staff and children. Such practices
include:
-
The storage of chemicals in locked cupboards.
-
Checking the safety of sandpits and outdoor
equipment.
-
Children’s awareness of personal safety, i.e. not
throwing equipment, walking inside.
